2010 This year NZLLA members are actively involved in the following projects. Submission on the Legislation Bill : To the Regulations Review Committee : sent from NZLLA -Angela McLuckie, Vice President This submission is from the New Zealand Law Librarians’ Association (NZLLA). The NZLLA has approximately 150 members & represents the interests of those working with legal information in New Zealand in academic, government and corporate organisations. The NZLLA supports the Legislation Bill 2010. The overall purpose of this Bill to modernise and improve the publication and availability of legislation is to be commended. In particular the NZLLA supports Part 2 subpart 1 of the Bill which requires that the PCO’s electronic versions of legislation be officialised and for the legislation to be produced in a timely fashion. The officialisation of the online versions of will aid those in the legal sector by providing fast and easy online access to legislation that is suitable for presentation in court . Officialisation will not only enable the legal fraternity in the business of law, but also make the law more accessible and therefore more transparent to the general public. The NZLLA is pleased to see that subpart 1 also provides for an ongoing commitment to the publishing of legislation in a printed form. We believe the continuation of printed versions of legislation is important in that it allows for access to legislation to those people are unable or unwilling to access online versions. Printed versions are also necessary as a ‘back up’ on the rare, but not completely unheard of, occasions when the internet is temporarily unavailable Finally the NZLLA is also pleased to see that the Bill makes an ongoing commitment to the provision of free access to electronic versions of legislation. We believe access to legislation is a fundamental cornerstone of our society and that the legislation should be an authorised and up to date version of the law. We appreciate the efforts made by Government to ensure this access remains free to all. This aim has led us over the years to participate in national and international discussions, to lobby Government on broad and specific issues and to foster dialogue between groups involved in providing or using legal information. The documents provided in this section provide an overview of the issues the NZLLA has commented on and lobbied for, in the past.
If you are interested in joining us to contribute to NZLLA lobbying activity on upcoming projects, or would like further information about our these activities, please contact the President Alistair Jenkin |
